Oamaru is home to the Bushy Beach Scenic Reserve where the extremely rare yellow-eyed penguin have a colony.

It’s interesting that this somewhat decayed sheet of paper is mounted in a new-looking frame under glass on the wall just outside the door of the observation deck at the Bushy Beach Scenic Reserve. I think I would have gone to the effort of printing a fresh copy.
Useful information just the same!

This is the view looking down from the observation platform, and the site where yellow-eyed penguins return from their day’s fishing.

We had a good view of the detail on the beach.

Seals were active in the area.

Birds were coming and going in the very windy environment. This group of birds assembled on the beach and then departed individually to their various nesting sites along the cliffs.

This one landed directly below us on the cliff and preened itself before heading off to the left to settle into it’s spot for the night.

We did all the recommended things, came hours before dusk, positioned ourselves perfectly to see the penguins come ashore, stayed until there wasn’t enough light for photography. Alas, no yellow-eyed penguins came ashore during our visit.
Thankfully, our friends shared this photo of a yellow-eyed penguin that they had taken on a different occasion.
It was a beautiful location. We saw lots of wildlife, just not our target species. Off for a good night’s sleep and tomorrow we’re on the road to Aoraki / Mt. Cook National Park!
